Determining what Mysteries of the Rosary to pray
The first thing to remember is that the Church doesn't require that you pray specific Mysteries on any given day. You are free to pray whatever set suits your needs.
"This indication is not intended to limit a rightful freedom in personal and community prayer, where account needs to be taken of spiritual and pastoral needs and of the occurrence of particular liturgical celebrations which might call for suitable adaptations" Rosarium Virginis Mariae
Even though there aren't any requirements concerning the Mysteries, there are traditions and suggestions.
Prior to the promulgation of Rosarium Virginis Mariae by Pope John Paul II, the traditional rotation of prayer was: Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday: Glorious; Monday, Thursday: Joyful; Tuesday, Friday: Sorrowful.
In his document on the Rosary, Pope John Paul II suggested the following rotation to include the new Luminous Mysteries: Sunday, Wednesday: Glorious; Monday, Saturday: Joyful; Tuesday, Friday: Sorrowful; Thursday: Luminous.
It is also traditional to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries throughout Lent and the Joyful throughout the Advent season.
